Our team of designers, packaging engineers and manufacturing experts set out to tackle the challenge of sustainable luxury wine packaging.
Luxury wine packaging is known for premium materials and craftsmanship. Often, mixed materials are used to achieve the beautiful finishes that customers expect from luxury brands. However, this approach creates challenges when it comes to sustainable design for kerbside recycling.
We started with a clean sheet of paper and the following key criteria:
-
Kerbside recyclability
-
Luxury look and feel
-
Mono material usage
-
Efficiency and functionality
“When we start working on a brief, there are often inherent requirements that we need to consider that impact the design process. In this case we were able to look at the project from a different perspective” Julian B, Lead Packaging Designer.
As we developed the box construction and selected the raw materials and manufacturing processes, we entered the specifications into the Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP) to ensure we were meeting the sustainable objectives we set ourselves as part of the brief.
One of the challenges consumers find with packaging recycling, is understanding what can and can’t be recycled. We’ve developed a unique luxury cardboard with the thickness of rigid box board packaging. This board not only prints and embosses beautifully but is also easily recyclable due to its flat pack construction.
One of the benefits of taking this approach and using the PREP tool as part of the design process, is being able to provide on-pack information that instructs the end user how to recycle the packaging.
Consumers Interest in Sustainable Luxury Wine Packaging
-
59% of consumers look for information on the label about recycling and sustainability.
-
46% of consumers say the biggest barrier to purchase was unclear labelling on packaging.
- 71% of consumers have chosen a product in the last six months based on its sustainability credentials.
Australian Recycling Label (ARL)
The ARL provides consumers with easy-to-understand, on-pack recycling information that removes confusion, saves time, and reduces the amount of waste going to landfill.
The label has clear instructions on how to dispose of each part of a product’s packaging correctly. The label was developed by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) in partnership with Planet Ark and PREP Design.
